My best tools for outdoors. Post 01

Outdoors must have.

Introduction:

In this series of post I will talk to you about my tools for the outdoors (canoe, kayaking, backpack, camping). All those item ant tip are good for the outdoor and I have personally tested them.

At the beginning

I did not start with all the equipment from day one. I did buy some very cheap equipment, just to find out that it was a waist of money. it turns out I payed twice.

My love of camping start with my first solo ride on bicycle 100 miles from home. I got all the cheapest stuff I could get. I did not have any money back then. Every single pieces failed.

Imagine I was 14 years old going away from home for an expedition like no one as done before (At that age we strongly believe no one else ever did what we did). On the first night I quickly found out that alcool stove are worthless to cook. You are hungry and tired it as to work quickly and efficiently. I did all I could with that equipment including taped my cheap tent.

Later I went in the army. I have learn to be efficient. I have seen years of experience and learn from it.

Then I wanted to keep living that outdoor experience. I made some research and found a compagnie MSR (Mountain Safety Research). I decided then that I would not spend money twice on equipment that would fail me on solo trip.

The first most important thing to have “Fire”

MSR Dragonfly Stove

MSR Dragonfly Stove was my first acquisition. I have tested it in a safe environment and then went on to test it on backpacking trip, a few short three day trip. it was perfect for my back pack. It work every single time. got my water hot. Allowed me to cook for long period.

Once the small test where done, I went on long canoe camping trips. It worked like a charm. I was able to last and still had fuel left. It made the trips fun and safe. Cooking fish or any meat just like I like and making large pot of stew without using up all the fuel.

My MSR Dragonfly Stove is now over 15 years old. I have replace the pump that is it. It still work perfectly. It went on lots of expedition in canoe and Kayaking and backpack. It still cooked well all this time.

Here is some point that I appreciate: light weight, mutli-fuel, robust, efficient usage of fuel, heat fast.

This video from MSR may help you decide if it is for you or not.

But there is always a but, practice turning it on before you leave, take the time to get the cotton wet with fuel, turn on slowly (cone will turn red amber) and progressively until it make a sound like a turbine.  Don’t forget to pump the fuel to keep the pressure even.

I strongly suggest to take a look at it if you are a serious outdoorsman.

Tips: Every time us use one Item in your kit, once your are done with it put it away in it’s pouch (cleaned and ready for next use), never lets your equipment on the ground. When you get tired you don’t see clearly. Have the habit of always putting your equipment away in there respective pouch, it will give you the confidence to know that all is safe, secured and ready to go if an emergency presented it self.
